roofing_materialWhen it comes time for a home owner to consider roofing in st louis mo, many options are available. Admittedly, some of the materials for re-roofing project are rarely used, or even available, in the United States. Others may not meet local building codes, or be suitable for your location. Others are simply unrealistically expensive for the average homeowner to seriously consider. But, depending on your finances, needs and other factors there are options besides the common three tab asphalt shingle.

But let’s begin with the asphalt shingle which is common because it’s been a great choice for almost 100 years. A development of the tar impregnated fiber roofing invented in the mid 19th century, asphalt shingles are now mostly made from fiberglass that has been bonded to asphalt and covered with grit. The better grades of modern asphalt shingles can last up to 30 years.

A variation of asphalt shingles is roll roofing. It is cheaper than shingles and installation is quick and easy. However, roll roofing doesn’t come in a wide variety of colors, nor does it have the durability of shingles.

Another type of roll roofing is membrane roofing. Originally used for commercial buildings, membrane roofing has been making inroads into the residential market. Sheets of synthetic material are laid on the roof and the seams are permanently sealed. This in effect covers the roof with a single, impervious layer. Membrane roofing is easier to install than asphalt shingles but don’t have asphalt’s durability.

Metal roofing is also a popular choice for homeowners, though it too is more expensive than asphalt shingles. Metal roofing can be made of aluminum, galvanized steel, or copper. It is installed either in the form of individual shingles or as long strips with interlocking seams. Roofing companies have a choice of several systems but a good grade of metal roofing, properly installed, can last up to 50 years and require little upkeep.

Expensive and not suitable for all homes are roofing tiles. Roofing tiles are usually some form of ceramic or stone though new materials have entered the market. Installation requires skill, which adds to the cost. Structural integrity might make some homes unsuitable for certain types of tiles but there’s no denying the elegance and value that tile roof adds to a home.

Wooden shingles were, at one time, the predominate material for homes. Cedar is the common type of wood shingle, a wood that can remain durable for up to 50 years. However, wood shingles are expensive and are best installed by professionals. They tend to rot and split, and have a poor fire rating, unless they are subjected to an expensive fire retardant treatment.
